It has been a long time since I sent out a newsletter. During the months of spring and summer I concentrated on the greenhouse business , that I just love . It is now winding down and I have a chance to talk with all of you.

We have some exciting new items added to the candle business website. You will be excited to know that I have partnered with a fellow Iowan. We have added Soy Candles back into the business. Soy Candles Season is approaching

It has been forever since I have been on here and frankly I feel kinda bad.. I did not realize that it would be hard to come here at least once a week and post, but it is and was

The summer months here in Iowa have been extremely HOT . We were very dry for some time , but now we are receiving some much needed rain . Get for the crops here .

Soy candles don't like the heat and humidity. Since they are from a natural source. They sometimes react to situations. I like to take the summer off from doing large wholesale candle orders. It is just best if you want a nicer looking candle upon arrival

I will be gearing up for fall and Christmas season starting at the end of August. Orders are now coming in , and I am getting my supplies also .

Depending on the heat in Sept. Orders will start to ship sometime in Sept. This just pertains to wholesale only.. Retail orders go out asap..

Well we are well into Feb. and it has started off very well for business. Wholesale candle orders are coming in. Most shops are gearing up for the spring season ahead , which I can't wait till that comes.

The weather has been quite mild and dry. I remember way back that in Jan usually is a cold month .. Where has that gone! I am not complaining , love the warm , hate the cold..

I am starting my greenhouse seeds , already.. and am getting excited for spring.. I will start heating the greenhouse in March and start moving plants out for transplanting , such a busy time .

Hi all that read this blog,

I thought I should write a bit today and let you know what new is happening here at soy candlesville.

I have added on the welcome page , Valentine related heart melts. These make great gifts and go nicely with the electric tart warmers. All heart cases with have a cute saying on them.

I have been having alot of interest in wholesale lately, I suppose everyone is trying to get setup in the new year

Sorry I have been away so long. I guess the time off during the holidays made me a bit lazy.
Just a few things to note

I have done some updated on my website, please check it out
I have plans to add a page of my other passion in life "greenhouse growing" , which I will be getting started on soon. Spring fever here it comes!

Soy Candles with essential fragrance oils

Today , I am getting my essential oil soy candles page ready.. My plans are to have a handful of fragrances very soon.

The nice thing about essential oils is they are a more natural approach and blend well with soy.
These types of candles derive from plants, roots , leaves . So this will be a nice addition to my site

Lets talk about Handmade Soaps today.

These handmade soaps are sure a hit with me. Just look at the wonderful counterparts these soaps are made from.

Alittle About Special Additions ~

~Essential Oils~ Pure natural plant extract , usually obtained by the distillation process. Huge amounts of plant materal must b processed to obtain minute amounts of EO's .

~Goat Milk~ Imparts a creamy , moisurizing lather. Lends a warm caramel color to the bar. Goat Mild soaps is Karla's first recommendation for persons with sensitive skin.

~Fragrance Oils ~ synthetic version of skin-safe oils. These oils make it possible to scent products with fragrances not normally found in nature.

~Tea Tree~ (Melaleuca) ~ used medicinally for it's germicidal qualities. Reputed to be beneficial for skin conditions such as acne or rashes.

Soy Candles and Candle Warmers

Today is the 26th of October. Does the time pass you on by it seems some days. We are getting cold in the evenings here with the days still in the 50-60's not to bad considering we could be seeing snow..

I would like to talk some on candle warmers today.. I believe this is a great invention .. because now you do not have to worry about an open flame.

The candle warmers are designed to place the jar soy candle right down in them.. as they heat ,they will eventually melt the complete candle jar . Throwing off a wonderful fragrance .

I have found on a 16oz jar it only takes 2-3 hours to achieve a complete melt of the entire soy candle. This is a good thing as the scent throw really takes affect.

I have added some new warmers. I have votive warmers and regular candle warmers. So make sure you take a look here . These make great gifts for the holidays.

Soy Candles - Dye Free or Colored

Hi, Today is Monday the 24th of October and here in Iowa it is pretty dang cold.. We had some snow showers yesterday. Which I guess I am not quite ready for but better get used to it..

I would like to talk a little about soy candles.. I know some people have there own preference to color or to stay dye free..

The thing about dye free is it is more natural and it blends with any decor. Having colored candles just makes you associate the color with the fragrance oil ( scent)

It's funny because when I make dye free candles , there are times I can't distinguish the fragrance.. So in fact I believe a person really do associate color with fragrance oils.

As a candle maker of soy candles , making all dye free has it's advantages. 1. dye free can make your candle burn better. 2. When making dye free soy candles you do not have the frosting look to the candles. 3. It does match any decor in your home.

Most people have mixed feelings on this subject.. as everyone has their own preference.

I have right now only dye free in the Victorian Style Jars and melts. See Picture above.

so what do you prefer? for me it wouldn't matter too much if I were purchasing.

Besides it is only cosmetic look of the candle.. It does not affect the scent throw at all.

Gourmet Roasted Soynuts

Today I would like to touch more on one of my new products. I have been using this product for over a week now and I would say they can be addictive.. What I am talking about is Soynuts. These are fantastic~! I am not saying this because I want to sell them , but also I want you to try them and see for yourself.

I like to mix some of the more sweet bags with say the harvest crunch. This combination is very good together.. It is so good I have the rest of the family using them as snacks too.

You can call them health insurance in a pod. The reason being soybeans are high in protein and fiber, low in fat and have no cholesterol.

It has had positive effects on High cholesterol, heart attacks and strokes, cancer, hot flashes during menopause and osteoporosis.

This is enough assurance for me..

Some ways of using soynuts is as snacks, toppings for salads, casseroles and also can substitute for nuts in baking.

Soy Candles and my Favorite Fragrance Oils

We are looking at Monday again. My weekend was busy.. I decided to work all weekend to check up on orders.. It really paid off~! I feel like today I can concentrate on much needed thinking time..

I bet you often wonder what soy candle fragrances are my favorites.. I do however think all of my candle scents are great .. I do have my favorites thou.
I love spiced cranberry, coconut cream pie, apple butter, pear berry, vanilla lace, grandma's kitchen . This is just a small list ..

What are some of my best sellers? I would have to say hot apple pie, blueberry cobbler, spiced apple, lavender vanilla, cinnamon, grandma's kitchen, vanilla lace, spiced cranberry .. to name a few

Of all the fragrance oils I have they all seem to sell at some time of the year.. In the fall and winter months most people like to lean toward the bakery & desserts , ~Fruits & Berries~ ~Vanilla's Spices & Nuts~

Of my list of 40 + scents they all do pretty well. If they are slow moving they are considered gone and replaced with a new one.

Soy Candles and Double Wicking

It's Friday~! Today will be a busy day!

The weather here here for the next few days is going to mild.. We are in a indian summer it feels like. As we approach 80 degrees today and tomorrow.. it will be a great time to get outside and do some unfinished projects.

Today I want to talk a little about Soy Candles and double wicking in larger jars. The advantages to doing this is that you achieve a maximum scent throw in a short period of time.. Most people like the idea of smelling their candle right away. As soy burns cooler, it is important to have adequate wicks. Having two wicks also means you get rid of those hang ups on the sides of the jar..

The correct time for burning a jar candle is 1 hr for each diamater inch of jar.. Which means if your jar width is 4 inches .. It should take up to 4 hours to achieve a melt pool clear across the jar. Sometimes this it is sooner, but this is a good rule of thumb to use.

I have had no luck with single wicking a larger jar.. What happens is you have place such a large wick to get it to burn all the way across , and sometimes when doing this it will smokes like crazy.. so I try to avoid that!

Soy Candles and Wick Dippers

How many of you just blow out your candles?? Yeah, I did too , until I found these wick dippers..

What a neat invention!

Instead of blowing it out, which then can lead to smoking wicks ..Push burning wick into wax puddle. Then pull up and straighten the wick . With the wick dipper you don't have to worry about smoking wicks.

It's Monday~ Let's Talk About Soy Candles & Burning

Today, I wanted to touch on how to properly burn a candle. Now I know some of you already know, but there are a few out there that don't. So this is for You

A Crucial part to burning candles is that If you are going to light your candle , make sure you will be there to stay with it at least until the candles melts clear across the jar.. This is called a melt pool.

This is important because if you do not let the candle burn properly, you will have hang ups on the sides of the jar.. Next time when you go to light the candle , it will most likely drown in its own liquid or those hang ups will stay there and you will not get the most from your candle.

You probably think well I already know this.. but it's funny , I have seen alot of candles with hang ups on the sides.. The wax will never catch up with each burn..

If this happens , the best way to try and correct it is to let the candle cool back down.. When it sets up take a knife and remove the hang up wax . Try to make it even all across the jar.

If you do not think you will be around for 1-4 hours .. It may be best to not even light the candle.. Candles burn at different rates , so every size of jar can vary.

Today has been busy , as orders are starting to come in for the fall and holiday rush.. Wow where does the time go !

Thinking about adding a new line of candles, essential oil soy candles.. With these candles they are natural oils which I like the idea of that.. Not sure if if is something my existing customers would like, maybe I should ask them.. maybe in my next newsletter..stay tuned!

Also gourmet soynuts which are made with soybeans, soy is very beneficial for you so I believe this would be a good addition to the site

Besides candles The weather here is Iowa turned colder finally, with a hard freeze tonight.. Yuck , not real happy about that, but I guess we will take what comes.

Are Soy Candles Easy to Make?

When you think of making soy candles or any type of candles some think it is easy to do.. I have been doing this for nearly 7 years and I am still learning.. Soy candles are very tricky , and require patience and time .. I have nearly 40 scents available , and they all require to be tested. This takes time as I have several jars to test them in..

Not all scents use the same wick.. Why you ask? Well some oils are heavy some are light. If you add color to the candle this to can affect how the candle burns.
I have even have candle scents that I can't wick, they just will not burn. There are several types , sizes of wicks .. Wicks determine how long this candle is going to burn before all the wax is used up.. If you placed too large of a wick , they are going to soot like crazy. So this is why testing is key and very important to developing great candles.

So as you see it isnt easy to make Soy Candles. It definately is a job like anything else.. Test , Test , Test and then Test Again.. I have found to write everything down when I test , and make sure you keep notes updated.

Getting Started with Soy Candles

Today I want to talk alittle when it all started.. the Who, What, When, Where

Well the Who is Me of course.. I want to tell you what made me get started , the year I began this adventure, and who and where it all affects.

I have always worked in town , but one year back in 1999 I decided I was tired of the punching the time clock thing.. I wanted to get something started for myself , something rewarding and something I could build on. So I started researching the net on candlemaking, Wow what a bunch of information. Got involved with some message boards, dealing with this subject .. You would not believe all the help that is out there if you need to some some quick info.

What happens next is getting some supplies, not alot , just enough to test on.. I have heard people say that making candles is easy.. Those are the ones obviously that have never done it.. I would say it is a science.. You must test and test until you feel you have a great smell , even burning, great looking product.. That is what I did and it takes alot of time and patience

I started out local and have expanded all over the United States selling my soy candles.. My biggest accounts now are wholesale which ship all the way to California and down to Florida, and many in between..

Soy Candles are really hitting the airwaves.. most people have heard of them, but not everyone has burned one.. When you do you will be hooked!

Getting to Know Me

Today is my very first day to blog. I am really excited to be here and hope to make alot of new friends.

First I must introduce myself. My name is Diane Mumm.. I am 41 yrs old and I live in Iowa. We are a farming family of 5 . With only 1 child left at home :-( . If you are familiar with Iowa at all you will know that corn and soybeans is the most popular crops. We do also raise cow/calf pairs and have feeder cattle.. Right now my husband is very busy with harvest , as here in Iowa where we live it has been very warm for this time of year..

My passion and what I do right now is candlemaking. This stays pretty busy in the fall and winter months and then tapers off in the summer. I make soy candles, if you are not familiar with them , you need to be.. I say this because of the very clean burning properties these candles have to the traditional candles.. This is what sets them apart the most I feel.. Also since they are made from the crop soybeans , the wax is all natural product.. All natural is very interesting to me.. and I hope to you also.. Having a website is giving me a chance to get the message out there and to also give customers some very nice gifts. I ship to all the United States and specialize in wholesale.. Retail is also very welcome

My other passion in greenhouse growing . This business has always been my first passion in life.. How rewarding it is when you can grow a plant from seed.. My greenhouse season starts in early Jan and goes till June.. I have a greenhouse that is 22x 70 and have customers that come out to purchase annual, perennials, vegs, and more.. I hope to post some pics sometime to let you see what I have all done in the last 5 years of this business.
